Microsoft Is Done Taking Crap and Apple… You Bastards. |
|
Jul 13, 2008 - 11:30 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Morning all…
So this past week Microsoft finally stepped up to the plate and announced to the world they were going to be spending in excess of 300 MILLION dollars on ad campaigns specifically to let the world know Vista does not suck and you should buy it. Let me say that again: Microsoft is going to spend 300 MILLION to tell everyone Vista DOES NOT SUCK. Are you kidding me?
Now from what I can tell (and this is pure conjecture on my part) this campaign is really geared towards what has become the company to beat and that happens to be Microsoft’s pesky little problem child who goes by the name of Apple Computers.
This nat on the mighty Microsoft’s ass has not only successfully beaten Vista into the ground with its magical and very funny ad’s which you all have seen by now, but it has also captured the up and coming and very lucrative hand held market with, not just the iPod but also with the astounding worldwide release of the amazing (yes, I said amazing) new iPhone 3G. If I was Microsoft I would seriously consider bringing a bigger hammer to the party cause from this angle Apple is standing in the room with a couple of sledge hammers.
From the perspective of the consumer (which like it or not we are all one) Apple has simply captured the hearts and minds of the public with an amazing marketing campaign, good solid consumer devices, and of course the complete and total cornering of the on-line media distribution market via iTunes. No matter what you think of Apple you have to give them props for going up against Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, AO-HELL, and Amazon and simply stealing distribution rights right out from underneath them all. Sure Apple took a chance on a hand held device that NONE of the other players wanted and took that device and made it as common WORLD WIDE as toilet paper. Seriously, how many iPods do you have? In my house we have… let’s see….wife, daughter, son number one, son number two, but NOT me! You read right, I support the Bill Gates foundation for more money than god and purchased a Zune which to be honest IS better than an iPod in my book BUT even I have to admit, the content offered by the Zune “store”…well, sucks. Seriously, compared to what iTunes offers …iTunes wins hands down.
So now that we have established Apple is the defacto standard when it comes to music/handheld multi-media players what about the multi-billion dollar phone market? Oh Apple didn’t forget about that in the least bit.
As you all know this past Friday was “iPhone Feeding Frenzy Day” here in the US and boy was it ever. I’m sure all read the stories about the lines around the block and the server crashes when it came to trying to activate the iPhone and all the bloggers PISSED they couldn’t get their shiny new device to work (most of those problems seem to be resolved... Spyware Sucks... |
|
Jun 28, 2008 - 7:39 AM - by Digital Dave
|
So... last weekend my wife walked into my office holding her laptop by the screen (which always makes me cringe) and gave me a quick "wife cry" stating "my PC is broken."
Now the "pc is broken" statement really does me no good so I took her PC (laptop) and asked what was wrong.
She kept telling me it was blue-screening and she kept having to reboot.
So I took the laptop, dropped all that I was doing, and started to look around the OS on the laptop. I didn't see much wrong at the time so I set the laptop down and started to use some of the cleaners I had on the laptop (CCLeaner, Disk Defrag, etc...) and set the laptop to the side to complete the work. About 5 minutes later, out of the corner of my eye I noticed a blue-screen popup. Normally I like to read the blue-screen errors as it sometimes helps me figure out what's wrong with the OS but this one looked weird. So I hit the ESC key and low and behold it went away and back to the desktop. Hmmmm...
Now I had seen this before and it was the old SysInternals "blue screen" screen saver. I asked my wife if she had put it on and she was like "what the hell are you talking about?" so I know it wasn't her. Now I knew something was wrong so I fired-up Task Manager which was little to no help so I asked her what anti-spyware her company had installed and she said "I have no idea" so I started to dig around and found nothing... nada... zippo!
Crap...
So I had to figure out what was wrong with the laptop and what kind of bugs were lurking on her hard drive so I loaded up Spyware Sweeper and was informed about a few trojans (one of them was winfixer.exe which came down in some program) and getting that baby off was going to be a problem.
So, I let spyware sweeper do its thing, rebooted and... nothing. The damn thing was still there! So I loaded up the System Internals Process Explorer and sure enough all kinds of nasty things were still running. Now what? Spyware sweeper was a bust and according to the directions I had found over on Symantec's website on how to remove winfixer.exe by hand I was a little leery about trying to remove this bad boy by hand.
So, I went and found "old faithful" which is an anti-spyware program I have mentioned on the site from time to time called Spyware Detector.
Now Spyware Detector can and will destroy just about ANY spyware you have installed at the time including Rootkit, Keylogger and Heuristic "bugs".
The new 2.0 version now contains a whopping 1+ MILLION definitions and as soon as I put it on it found 135 "spyware" the registered version of Spyware Sweeper had missed.
I completed the scan, set the "shields", quarantined the "bugs", rebooted and manually removed the old Sysinternals "blue-screen" screen... [Read More]

Get an HDMI-equipped graphics card for $19 |
Jul 23, 2008 - 5:22 PM - by Digital Dave
|
You read right. Of course a rebate is all part of the deal but still, for a media center PC this is not a bad card.
Want to turbocharge your PC's video performance? The Asus ATI Radeon HD3450 graphics card works magic on the cheap. Though an entry-level card, it comes with an HDMI output and other bells and whistles. It lists for $49 (already a steal), but NewBiiz has the ATI Radeon HD3450 on sale for just $19 (after a $10 mail-in rebate).

Wow... guess Microsoft has scared the market a bit.
VMware has launched its first counter-attack to Microsoft's pricing structure for its virtualization products, announcing that ESXi, its lightweight hypervisor, is going to be given away for free.
The announcement came from new president and CEO Paul Maritz, who took the reigns from dismissed co-founder Diane Greene on July 8. Maritz made the remarks during VMware's second quarter earnings call on Tuesday afternoon.

OutlookTools 2.1 (make Outlook do what you want) |
|
Jul 22, 2008 - 5:55 PM - by Digital Dave
|
I use this tool (it's free by the way) so I can better manage my Outlook sessions. For instance, I needed to get a CERT onto my iPhone and Outlook kept blocking the attachment. With this tool, I was able to temporarly set and allow the CERT to be sent correctly and once I attached had the CERT installed on my iPhone I went back, un-checked the box and my security was back to where it was.
As I said the tool is free and really makes things MUCH easier to work with when it comes to Outlook and all the options you simply have a hard time finding.
OutlookTools is a support and advanced settings tool for Microsoft Office Outlook. It gives you easy access to Outlook settings and data folders and allows you to change settings that are normally only possible through the registry.
Main Program Features
* Easy access to Outlook settings and data folders
* Easy access to troubleshooting tools
* Start Outlook with a startup switch
* Clear the Most Recently Used lists
* Make the New Mail Alert stay up for longer than 30 seconds
* Unblock attachments
* Hides options not available for your Outlook version

Nifty little tool.
Windows only: Free utility Windows Updates Downloader is a seriously convenient tool for anyone starting over with a fresh Windows re-installation (such as a slipstreamed XP installation with SP3 pre-loaded), or anyone who wants to make their updates portable for later installation. Once installed, you have to point the app at an "Update List" for Windows XP or Vista (or Office 2003, if that's installed).

Microsoft warns of impending Windows Search auto update |
|
Jul 22, 2008 - 9:20 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Get ready. Oh, and just so you know I have installed it and it works just fine (for me that is).
Microsoft Corp. has warned Windows users that it will soon turn on automatic distribution for a major search update that requires machines to re-index all local data.
In a post added to the Microsoft Update team's blog Friday, the company said it is planning to release Windows Search 4.0 to Windows Update "sometime in late July." Windows Search 4.0, which went final in early June, sports stability and reliability improvements, Microsoft said at the time, and gives more control to enterprise IT administrators over users' access to and use of search.

Windows Vista: Not as Bad as You've Heard! |
|
Jul 22, 2008 - 7:02 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Over at ZDNet, Ed Bott has posted an intriguing item on Microsoft’s attempt to reintroduce Windows Vista to a world that seems to have its fair share of Vista skeptics. Ed noticed the image at left, comparing Vista doubters to flat-earth believers, on the Microsoft.com home page. (It wasn’t there when I just checked, so I’ve swiped Ed’s copy.)
Ed’s wondering if the image is a precursor of the message that Microsoft plans to spend $300 million hammering home in a new Vista ad campaign. If it is, he seems guardedly optimistic that it’s a smart move by the behemoth of Redmond. I’m not so sure.

OpenSUSE 11 RC1: The Mercedes-Benz to Ubuntu’s Volkswagen |
|
Jul 22, 2008 - 6:59 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Looks terrific to me.
The first thing you’ll notice about OpenSUSE 11 is the completely renovated installer program. In fact, I’d have to say that next to Mac, this is probably the most beautiful installer program I have ever seen. Beauty isn’t just skin deep, however — a lot of time and work has been invested to make the SUSE installer faster and easier to use. A complete install, with everything, including GNOME, KDE, XFCE and the development and server packages — sans the multilingual documentation selected on my ThinkPad T60, with a 32-bit 1.8Ghz Core Duo and 2GB of RAM took approximately 40 minutes. That ain’t too shabby for a full DVD worth of stuff.

Amidst Rumors About Jobs Health Problems, Apple Shares Drop |
Jul 22, 2008 - 6:24 AM - by Digital Dave
|
I noticed he looked a bit pale.
On Monday, an article in the New York Post has reopened the debate about Steve Jobs allegedly health problems.Quoting an unnamed Wall Street source, the New York Post said that Apple's hedge fund investors are very worried after Steve Jobs appearance at MacWorld 2008.
In June, Apple downplayed the rumors rumors and speculations regarding Steve Jobs’ health. The company has issued a statement saying that he was affected by “a common bug”. Apple’s spokesperson noted that he had received antibiotics as treatment and is now recovering. After his speech at WWDC, some major news sites and various blogs have commented about Job’s physical appearance. Apple’s CEO appears to have lost some weight and he looked a little pale.

Hidden iPhone 3G firmware "fixes" yellow screens |
|
Jul 21, 2008 - 9:15 AM - by Digital Dave

Hmmm... mine seems to be working okay.
Although clicking "Check for Updates" in iTunes continues to reveal no new firmware, touching "Restore" installs firmware two builds newer than what was loaded on to the new iPhones in the factory, bumping them from 5A345 to 5A347.
Many of those claim the lengthy process brings iPhone 3G's color point back to a more neutral position, eliminating the tint altogether.

SBS 2008: Same old bundle with new Vista wrapper |
|
Jul 21, 2008 - 6:40 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Sure, but the combo of all the apps in one package still makes this an appealing package.
With network-attached storage devices selling for just a few hundred bucks per terabyte, and online service providers offering e-mail and full productivity applications for a few dollars per user per month, Microsoft's Small Business Server 2008 is entering into a tougher market than its older siblings have had to endure.
Microsoft's response? Let's paint SBS 2008 with the Vista brush and focus more on features that target the external, Internet side of the bundle instead of the traditional internal file-server side. In fact, Microsoft stresses the "application server" aspect of SBS 2008 far more than its file, print and workgroup server features. That said, after taking a close look at SBS 2008 RC0 (Microsoft recently released RC1 but there is not a significant delta between what we tested and that new beta code), we're not sure Microsoft is making any better a case for this version than for previous ones. Microsoft plans to formally launch SBS 2008 in November.
